Countless Casts

“Countless Casts” That was the comment from converted surface fisherman, Ricky Fitzroy as we “chatted” over the internet about his latest surface caught Murray Cod and what has turned out to be his largest fish to date!

When I posed the question “Was it worth all those casts?” the answer was a definite YES! Ricky and his mates only discovered that Murray Cod will rise to the surface to take prey and of course surface lures, only recently and then set about proving it to themselves. The results have been outstanding, with most trips resulting in some action off the surface. Many would have given up ages ago as is often the case with the use of surface lures.

Ricky also commented that for the past 3 years, he and his mates were avid bait fisherman and it had yielded them next to no quality fish. I went on to tell him it’s been almost 20 years since I last used live bait. I have never caught so many Murray Cod since switching to lures. They are just so “deadly” on our native species!

My advice to anyone wanting to “add another string to their bow” and achieve what is arguably the BEST way to target Murray Cod, is to persist with this technique (surface fishing) and the rewards will come! Just ask Ricky!

Regards, Michael.
